Hairspray
USA (New York)
18 Jul 2002 - 4 Jan 2009
Hairspray, based on the John Waters film, plays at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York.
It's one of those nostalgic musicals. Set in Baltimore in 1962, Tracy Turnblad wants to dance. She wins a slot on a local TV dance show, and this big girl with even bigger hair becomes a teen celebrity overnight. But with fame comes pressure and Tracy soon meets her potential nemesis - the show's reigning princess for the coveted title of "Miss Teenage Hairspray 1962."
Based on John Waters' 1988 film, the musical was first seen on Broadway in 2002, where it garnered eight Tony Awards, ten Drama Desk Awards and five Outer Circle Critics Awards, each including Best Musical. It is written by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan (book), Marc Shaiman (music), Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman (lyrics). It went on to similarly sweep the awards in London's West End.
The director is Jack O'Brien, with choreographer Jerry Mitchell, set designer David Rockwell, costume designer William Ivey Long, lighting by Kenneth Posner and sound by Steve C Kennedy. Lon Hoyt is the musical director, with Harold Wheeler's orchestrations and Marc Shaiman's arrangements.
Just like
The Producers (which was a straight film before becoming a stage musical and then remade as a film musical),
Hairspray has already made it full circle to film musical status, having opened on the big screen in summer 2007.
