Tristan und Isolde
 (New York)
28 Nov 2008
Daniel Barenboim makes his belated Metropolitan Opera debut conducting this revival of Dieter Don's production of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. Peter Seiffert and Katarina Dalayman star as the titular lovers.

Tristan has been sent to bring Isolde from Ireland for King Marke to marry. She cured Tristan from a mortal wound he received in killing her betrothed and she refuses to acknowledge that she has fallen in love with him. She wants to take revenge and orders her maid Brangäne to make a poison, which Brangäne substitutes for an all-too-successful love potion. Once in Cornwall, and with Isolde married to King Marke, Tristan's meetings with her have to be clandestine but, of course, they are discovered and Tristan allows himself to be wounded...

The final act is set at Tristan's castle in Brittany. His life is ebbing away and his aide Kurnewal has sent for Isolde. She arrives in advance of King Marke and henchman Melot (who have actually come to pardon Tristan), but Tristan dies in her arms. Isolde's final soliloquy - her famous liebestod (love-death) - is where she realises that only in death will her love for Tristan be consummated.

Pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim makes his belated Met debut having conducting Wagner at Bayreuth, the Berlin's Staatsoper Unter den Linden and also La Scala Milan. Joining Seiffert and Dalayman, Barenboim's cast in Dieter Dom's Met production of contrasting colours include Michelle DeYoung returning as Brangäne, Gerd Grochowski as Kurwenal and, sharing the role of King Marke, René Pape (28 November & 2 December) and Kwangchul Youn (6, 12, 16 & 20 December).

The Metropolitan Opera is one of the world's great opera houses and by far America's largest. Dating back to 1883 its early history includes such conducting luminaries as Gustav Mahler and Arturo Toscanini, let alone the world's most famous opera singers. In 1966 it moved to its present theatre in the Lincoln Center and, since 1975, James Levine has been music director. This 125th anniversary season sees the recent appointment of Peter Gelb as general director, whose first solo season will be 2009/10.
