The Magic Flute at the Met
(New York)
22 Dec 2008
As a special holiday treat, Julie Taymor's acclaimed abbreviated version of Mozart's
The Magic Flute is revived in all its colour and bewitching splendour at the Metropolitan Opera, including four family-friendly matinées.
Seen as a Masonic allegory, or a comedy of cosmic proportions, Mozart's music accompanies his friend Emanuel Schikaneder's tale about young Prince Tamino trails as he tries to win the hand of the beautiful Pamina, whose mother, the fearsome Queen of the Night, guards her jealously. Tamino falls in with Papagano, the bird catcher, who is also on the lookout for a girlfriend!
The wizard Sarastro puts the men through trials by fire and water to test their sincerity, with the promise of a girl called Papagena for Papageno as an incentive for him to succeed. They come through with flying colours and their unions are blessed by Sarastro, with the Queen and her followers (who turn out to be the baddies) defeated.
Julie Taymor is best-known for her stage version of Disney's
The Lion King, now running across the globe. It is her wonderful eye for stage effects that have also proved so popular in her Met production of
The Magic Flute, which exists in both a complete version and this shortened one, specifically developed for families.
This revival sees the Met debut of 2005 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World winner Nicole Cabell as Pamina, with Cyndia Sieden as the Queen of the Night. Tamino is played by Dimitri Pittas apart from on 30 December when the role is sung by Russell Thomas. Rodion Pogossov returns to the role of Papageno and Eric Owens as Sarastro. Asher Fisch conducts.
The Metropolitan Opera is one of the world's great opera houses and by far America's largest. Dating back to 1883 its early history includes such conducting luminaries as Gustav Mahler and Arturo Toscanini, let alone the world's most famous opera singers. In 1966 it moved to its present theatre in the Lincoln Center and, since 1975, James Levine has been music director. This 125th anniversary season sees the recent appointment of Peter Gelb as general director, whose first solo season will be 2009/10.
