La Bohème

Frédéric Chaslin conducts this revival of Franco Zeffirelli's famous production of Puccini's classic weepie, La Bohème at the Metropolitan Opera. Maija Kovalevska sings Mimì while Ramön Vargas returns as Rodolfo.

Based on Murger's Scènes de la vie de Bohème, Puccini brings to life the poverty-stricken lives of four artists and their girlfriends. Mimì meets Rodolfo one cold Christmas Eve, in Paris' Latin Quarter, and the two (feeling around in the dark because her candle has gone out) fall in love. Rodolfo is an artist, living with three other lads - Colline, Schaunard and Marcello, the lover of Musetta. Both couples break up, and the opera ends in tragedy as Rodolfo finds Mimi dying of consumption in her freezing garret.

Joining Kovalevska and Vargas are Susanna Phillips, making her Metropolitan Opera debut as Musetta, Mariusz Kwiecien (Marcello), Tommi Hakala (Schaunard), while both Oren Gradus (Colline) and Paul Plishka (in the joint roles of Benoit and Alcindoro) also return to their roles.

The Metropolitan Opera is one of the world's great opera houses and by far America's largest. Dating back to 1883 its early history includes such conducting luminaries as Gustav Mahler and Arturo Toscanini, let alone the world's most famous opera singers. In 1966 it moved to its present theatre in the Lincoln Center and, since 1975, James Levine has been music director. This 125th anniversary season sees the recent appointment of Peter Gelb as general director, whose first solo season will be 2009/10.
